About

A little bit about us

Matt was raised on a commercial cattle ranch on South Mountain in Owyhee County Idaho, which is about 15 miles south east of Jordan Valley, Oregon. Because of such fond memories, and the type of cattle we strive to raise, we continue the name and legacy under the name South Mountain Cattle.

Matt graduated from Boise State University with a degree in accounting and obtained his CPA license. After graduation, Matt spent time working in accounting and finance positions. That time and experience has proven to be very valuable in running our business today. As our family grew, and by the time our kids were starting school, we decided to make the change to full time ranching in 2008.

We began our purebred herds of Angus and Hereford cattle in 2005. Today our entire cowherd has been born and raised on our ranch.  Our cow herd is the result of stacking multiple generations of proven AI sires well suited for high desert ranches in the western United States.

Most of these calves are marketed through a coop that we are members of. We also direct market some of our beef to consumers. Our participation in all phases of the cattle industry gives us a very valuable perspective into how our genetics perform, and what the industry needs next.

One of our favorite things about agriculture is all of the great people we meet. We have made so many wonderful friends in the cow business.  We continually strive to raise better cattle that will make your operations more profitable.

We feel that industry involvement is important.   In 2014 Matt attended the NCBA Young Cattlemen’s Conference. Matt served on the board of directors and as the treasurer for the Idaho Cattle Association from 2013 to 2018

Matt and Pyper are raising two cowboys and two cowgirls on the ranch.
